From humble beginnings on the farm to an outstanding career in fine jewellery

This year marks a remarkable milestone for Staffordshire jeweller Allen Brown as he celebrates 40 years of creating bespoke jewellery, building lasting customer relationships and establishing one of the region’s most respected independent jewellery businesses.

What began as a passion for creativity has grown into a thriving family business that has become part of thousands of life’s most treasured moments, from engagements and weddings to anniversaries, christenings and family celebrations.

His journey into jewellery was far from traditional. Growing up on a family farm, he spent much of his childhood helping with agricultural work while nurturing a love for art, design and craftsmanship.

“I’ve always been interested in design ever since I was a child,” he said.

After studying jewellery design, family circumstances brought him back to Staffordshire to help run the family farm. It was during this period that a small exhibition at Ridware Art Centre changed the course of his future.

The exhibition proved an immediate success, giving him the confidence to establish his own workshop and shop while continuing to work on the farm each day.

“I used to be on the farm in the morning milking the cows, then running the shop during the day, then go back home and milk the cows again.”

Forty years later, that determination, creativity and work ethic continue to define the business.

Throughout his career, he has remained committed to creating jewellery with meaning. Rather than following trends, he has built his reputation on listening carefully to customers and helping them create pieces that reflect their own stories.

“We listen to what the customer wants.”

Today, bespoke commissions and jewellery remodelling remain at the heart of the business, allowing treasured family pieces to be reimagined for future generations.

The milestone is also an opportunity to celebrate the relationships that have helped shape the business over four decades. Many customers have returned time and time again, with Brown creating jewellery not only for couples beginning their lives together but later for their children and grandchildren too.

“I’ve made jewellery throughout their married life, then I’ve done engagement rings for their children.”

That loyalty has become one of the defining features of the business. Approximately 85 per cent of customers come through recommendations or repeat business, something he describes as the greatest compliment any jeweller can receive.

Alongside loyal customers, he also credits his dedicated team for the success of the business. Many staff members have been with the company for years, helping to create the welcoming, family atmosphere that customers regularly comment upon.

The team behind Allen Brown Jewellery

While the jewellery industry has changed significantly over the last four decades, his passion for design and craftsmanship remains as strong as ever.

Reflecting on the anniversary, he admitted the significance of reaching such a milestone has only recently begun to sink in.

“It’s only just dawning on me really, recently… it’s a big thing.”

As Allen Brown Jewellery celebrates 40 years in business, the achievement represents far more than longevity. It is a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, trust and the countless special moments the team has helped create for families across the region.

Looking back on four decades of work, he believes the business’s greatest legacy is not measured in sales or awards, but in the role it has played in people’s lives.

“If we’ve helped make significant moments for people, I think that’s a really nice thing.”

After 40 years, that simple philosophy remains at the heart of everything the business does.
