At Bowbrook Care Home in Lichfield, a heartwarming approach to care is transforming the lives of residents. By championing the power of intergenerational relationships, the team is enriching daily life and boosting wellbeing in a way that goes beyond traditional care.
Bowbrook specialises in supporting people living with dementia and is built on the philosophy that emotional wellbeing and meaningful social connections are just as important as the physical aspects of care. This belief is brought to life through a vibrant programme of activities that connect residents with young people in local schools, community groups and the children of the caring team.

Children are regularly welcomed into the home, where they read stories with residents, enjoy board games, take part in arts and crafts, and even lend a hand in the garden. These shared moments create bonds that are both uplifting and deeply meaningful.
Lucie Goodall, manager at Bowbrook, explains:
“The presence of young people brings excitement and enthusiasm into our home. Residents who can be quiet or inactive become livelier and more eager to take part in activities when there are children around.
“The visits create opportunities for residents to share their knowledge and life skills, such as teaching the children how to plant seeds and care for growing plants – this in turn helps residents to feel valued. The children also benefit from these interactions, they enjoy learning new skills from the residents and hearing their life stories.”

Special occasions are also celebrated together. For Chinese New Year, residents worked collaboratively to create a giant dragon. On the day, employees’ children visited wearing sections of the dragon, parading through the home with music, gifts and special ‘fortunes’.
Lucie adds:
“We know that for many residents living with dementia, sensory-rich activities like this can evoke emotional memories even when cognitive memory is impaired.
“For Chinese New Year the atmosphere in the home was wonderful, there was so much laughter and joy. Residents were smiling, clapping, and reaching out to engage with the children.
“Intergenerational relationships are so rewarding. We see increased energy levels, improved mood and a sense of purpose in our residents, while children gain new skills, confidence and enjoyment.”

Bowbrook is purpose-built and designed specifically to support people living with dementia. Our modern facilities are state-of-the art and we welcome both individuals and couples.
