As the crisp air settles in for half term and the leaves undergo their final transformation, it’s the perfect time to dive into the seasonal joys of autumn and take in one of the region’s enchanting pumpkin patches.
With a great range of choices available, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get the kids outdoors, away from screens, and immersed in the beauty of nature – as well as incorporating a bit of exercise too.
Here in Staffs, we’re blessed with a wonderful array of pumpkin patches, each offering a unique experience, from sprawling fields to quaint shops brimming with autumn goodies.
This year, families can choose from popular destinations like Rymans Pumpkins, where you can spend the day exploring their fields, or Lichfield Maize Maze, where a charming farm atmosphere awaits.
Slightly further afield and with its on site butchery and restaurant is Essington Fruit Farm and in North Warwickshire, Hatton Country World is hosting an all encompassing halloween spectacular.
Rymans Pumpkins
Having become one of the region’s top destinations for pumpkin picking, Rymans offers a fun and memorable experience for the whole family.
With acres of land showcasing pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, visitors can meander through the farm at their leisure, handpicking the perfect pumpkin for carving, decorating, or cooking. The farm sets itself apart with its friendly atmosphere, ample photo opportunities, and a variety of activities such as hayrides and seasonal refreshments.
What truly distinguishes Rymans is its attention to detail. From organised parking to helpful guidance on safe pumpkin carving, the experience is both stress-free and enjoyable. Their large indoor carving shed is equipped with safety tools and staff assistance, allowing families to enjoy this fun activity without worry. Plus, Rymans promotes sustainability by offering locally sourced products in an eco-friendly environment, making it not just a fun outing but a responsible one too.
The Great Outdoors
Helen from Rymans says: “There’s definitely something magical about seeing people spending time outdoors, for us it’s great to be able to witness families reconnecting while enjoying the activity of pumpkin picking. Also, children can run freely, discovering the wonders of foraging, and appreciate the simple joys that the great outdoors provides.
Being outside offers countless health benefits too.
Garry Kerr who runs Lichfield’s Battle Bootcamp says: “It can improve mood, boost creativity, and encourage physical activity.
“Instead of being glued to screens, adults and kids can integrate a family day out with some great physical exercise disguised as fun.
“Climbing safely over hay bales can work the whole body, jumping or just kicking about in leaf piles can work the core, and of course just exploring new surroundings can work wonders for the mind.”
Lichfield Maize Maze
The award-winning Lichfield Maize Maze provides a delightful escape for families and adventure seekers alike. Spanning an impressive 10 acres and crafted from over a million maize plants, this maze features 3.75 miles of pathways woven into a unique whale design, all while offering breathtaking views of nature.
Ideal for families with younger children, the maze includes a mini maze for little explorers. Along the way, visitors can learn about marine life, keeping both kids and adults entertained. After navigating the maze, families can unwind in the picnic area, let the kids climb bale towers, or enjoy the mini tractor yard—all set against the picturesque backdrop of vibrant sunflowers and wildflowers.
This year, the seasonal fun continues with Lichfield Maize Maze’s spooky sunflower walk leading to a hidden pumpkin patch, where families can pick their own pumpkins. Don’t miss the iconic Pumpkin House—perfect for that annual family photo tradition! To top off the experience, Poms of Lichfield will be on-site serving delicious hot chocolate and snacks to keep visitors warm and satisfied.
Every visitor receives a map, activity cards, and stickers as part of their maze experience, ensuring a fun and interactive day out.
Hatton Country World
Further afield, head to Hatton Country World on weekends from October 19 and daily from October 26 to 31 for a Halloween Spooktacular. Take a ride on the tractor, encountering some spooky surprises along the way, then head to the pumpkin patch to pick your own.
If you fancy a day out, Poplars Farm Shop in North Warwickshire has you covered with tractor rides, street food vendors, a cozy coffee shop, and a pick-your-own pumpkin experience. They also offer sweetcorn and potatoes, along with maize to add a touch of flair to your autumn décor. A £3 booking fee per person applies, but you can easily make an afternoon of it here.
So, grab your boots, gather the family, and prepare to experience the joy of pumpkin picking! As you wander through the patches, you’ll not only find the perfect pumpkin but also reconnect with the beauty of nature and each other. Happy foraging!
